Cuba withstood the most expensive year in the history of the blockade

For the first time in the history of the genocidal policy of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba, the accounting losses on the Antillean archipelago exceeded 5 billion dollars in one year, the Foreign Minister of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla

In the annual report that updates the magnitude of the damage of this extraterritorial policy in the daily and prospective development of the Island, the Foreign Minister denounced, in a virtual conference, the growing hostility on the part of the United States, whose government, regardless of the scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic, imposed more sanctions on the Caribbean country, in frank violation of all kinds of foreign trade and investment regulations.

By virtue of the resolution that will be presented to the United Nations General Assembly, entitled Need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba, Rodríguez Parrilla reviewed the main effects that, between April of 2019 and March 2020, caused the siege in the different sectors of society.

He specified that, since the coming to power of President Donald Trump, more than 90 restrictive measures have been counted in just one year, practically one per week, which indicates the fury to cause greater suffering to the Cuban people and negatively affect the efforts of the country to articulate a socioeconomic strategy.

“The blockade is applied extraterritorially against the sovereignty of third States, companies and citizens of other countries,” said the Head of Cuban Diplomacy, and urged the international community to once again overwhelmingly reject the cruel interference policy, and approve, by 29th. occasion, the motion for a resolution at the UN General Assembly, in May 2021.

He affirmed that the persecution against fuel supplies, sanctions and slander are increasingly perverse: “Whoever wins the elections in the United States will have to face that the blockade harms Cubans, families, violates human rights and makes travel, visas and family reunification difficult.

He referred to how the measures also affect the American people and make his government suffer from “profound isolation and discredit,” in addition to causing damage to other countries, due to its violation of national sovereignty.

He described as cynical the intention to convince Cubans that the blockade has no real impact, to minimize it as a matter of bilateral dispute, when families within the archipelago suffer it “every day and every hour.”

“The blockade, in its nature, and its extraordinary reinforcement in these two years, is an expression of the historical inability of the United States Government to recognize that Cuba is an independent nation, which according to international law must fully enjoy and exercise their sovereignty and self-determination, ”assured Rodríguez Parrilla.
