It was the last activity in D\u00edaz-Canel\u2019s week-long visit to New York City for the United Nations 78th General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this event, titled, \u201cVoices of Dignity,\u201d the movement to lift all unilateral coercive measures against Cuba and Venezuela was elevated through cultural performances such as that of rapper and union organizer Linqua Franqa, Latin jazz musician Arturo O\u2019Farrill, and Brooklyn-based DJ Cardamami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his address, D\u00edaz-Canel outlined the specific ways in which the US blockade against Cuba is putting a stranglehold on the Cuban people. \u201cThe US government prevented suppliers of pulmonary ventilators from selling them to us at a time when we needed these ventilators to expand our hospitals to combat COVID,\u201d D\u00edaz-Canel said, to resounding boos from the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPessimism is not the nature of revolutionaries. That is not an option for those of us who believe a better world is possible. It is not an option for those of us who have the belief that it is worth it to fight for that better world,\u201d D\u00edaz-Canel told the gathered North Americans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe combined effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and the intensification of the US economic blockade are posing serious challenges to our economic growth and the satisfaction of many of our public. But even in these conditions we have continued and will continue to prioritize social justice. We shall continue to satisfy the basic needs of our populace. We shall continue to defend equity. And we shall continue to make our strongest efforts to defend our socialist system for which so many generations of Cubans have sacrificed themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venezuela is no stranger to US hybrid war, and Gil Pinto spoke to the novel threats that his country faces. \u201cThe American empire is trying to impose a new military threat in our country, and the excuse that they are using is a border dispute that Venezuela has had for many many years\u2026today, the US is trying to mobilize military troops in Guyana, a conflict they are not involved in at all. If we want a settlement of this border dispute, of course this must be handled through diplomatic means.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Addrey, who was trained at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Havana highlighted Cuba\u2019s humanitarian work in training doctors from across the world and sending medical brigades of Cuban doctors to dozens of countries. \u201cCuba has sent medical internationalists to 165 countries in 60 years of this incredible humanitarian policy,\u201d said Dr. Addrey, \u201cELAM is an extension of Cuba\u2019s long history of medical internationalism,\u201d she said. \u201cFidel taught us that we must be resolute that our bodies will no longer pay the price for imperialist crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vijay Prashad described the motivations of those who drive sanctions and attacks against Cuba and Venezuela:&nbsp;\u201cWe love life. We love humanity. We love human beings\u2026 They love death. They love suffering. They want people to be hungry. They need people to go and die in their wars,\u201d Prashad declared. \u201cThose who love life love socialism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One day after the Voices of Dignity event, the Cuban embassy in DC suffered a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/09\/25\/cuban-embassy-in-washington-dc-faces-another-terrorist-attack-activists-express-solidarity\/\">terrorist attack<\/a>, whilst on Friday September 22, the Senator who has been the chief bulwark of sanctions against Cuba and Venezuela, Bob Menendez of New Jersey, was indicted on charges of corruption. He thus far refuses to resign from his post. Menendez had several Cuba solidarity activists&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/06\/22\/us-cuba-solidarity-activists-arrested-after-trying-to-meet-with-senator-bob-menendez-sanctioner-in-chief\/\">arrested<\/a>&nbsp;in June when they came to his office for a peaceful discussion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prashad also mentioned the wave of African nations that are standing up against French neocolonialism, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/09\/23\/under-french-backed-military-ruler-mahamat-deby-chad-is-a-pressure-cooker-waiting-to-explode\/\">Chad<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/09\/25\/french-decision-to-withdraw-troops-from-niger-is-a-testimony-to-the-determination-and-will-of-the-nigerien-people\/\">Niger<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/01\/25\/burkina-faso-ejects-french-troops\/\">Burkina Faso<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/09\/18\/burkina-faso-mali-and-niger-form-alliance-of-sahel-states-to-advance-collective-defense\/\">Mali<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/02\/15\/burkina-faso-guinea-and-mali-propose-strategic-axis-amid-french-military-ouster\/\">Guinea<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are big changes taking place in the world these days,\u201d Prashad said. \u201cIn the entire Sahel region, one country after the other has said, \u2018France, go home!\u2019\u201d This last statement was met with enormous applause from the crowd, and chants of \u201cFrance, go home!\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Voices of Dignity event concluded with a resolute slogan: \u201c\u00a1Cuba s\u00ed, bloqueo no!\u201d (Cuba yes, blockade no!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>D\u00edaz-Canel pays surprise visit to solidarity activists<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon arrival on September 18, D\u00edaz-Canel&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/09\/20\/cuba-returns-to-harlem-to-honor-malcolm-x\/\">visited<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;Malcolm X &amp; Dr. Betty Sabazz Memorial and Educational Center in Harlem to pay tribute to the historic meeting between Fidel Castro and Malcolm X in 1960. The African-American revolutionary leader welcomed the Cuban delegation at a time when the United States establishment was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/131793\/castro-came-harlem\">shunning, ridiculing, and isolating<\/a>&nbsp;the newly liberated country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_61774\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"498\" width=\"747\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/peoplesdispatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Diaz-Canel-Malcolm-X-1024x682.jpg?resize=747%2C498&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61774\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel paid homage to slain Black revolutionary Malcolm X on September 18.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On September 19,&nbsp;D\u00edaz-Canel&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/09\/20\/miguel-diaz-canel-brings-the-voice-of-the-exploited-to-the-unga\/\">addressed<\/a>&nbsp;the General Assembly. \u201cCuba will continue to strengthen its democracy and socialist model which, despite being under siege, has proved how much a developing country, with scarce natural resources, can do,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On September 22, dozens of activists of all ages marched from Grand Central Station in midtown Manhattan to the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations where they held a short rally. This action was organized by the International Peoples\u2019 Assembly, the People\u2019s Forum, the ANSWER Coalition, and others, as part of an international call to take Cuba off of the United States\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/06\/21\/against-all-reason-cuba-remains-on-the-us-state-sponsors-of-terrorism-list\/\">State Sponsors of Terrorism<\/a>&nbsp;list.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During their rally outside the mission, D\u00edaz-Canel paid the demonstrators a surprise visit.&nbsp;<em>Peoples Dispatch<\/em>&nbsp;spoke to several people in the crowd, who were alarmed at first at seeing an entourage of suited men walk up to their action, but quickly turned elated when they realized that the President of Cuba himself had decided to attend their event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[When] I realized it was the President\u2026I was overcome with emotion,\u201d said Lillian House, an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation who was a lead organizer in Denver during the 2020 uprising against police brutality. \u201cTo me, Diaz-Canel is a towering figure, the person entrusted by the Cuban people to take up the mantle of Fidel and Raul, someone who has lived his entire life in dedication to his people, and he came out to see us and thank us for our solidarity. Never do politicians in the United States come out to protests without teams of press and pre-prepared statements. Never is it in genuine relationship with the people and their struggles. It was a great honor to be there for that expression of mutual solidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">D\u00edaz-Canel joined protesters in chants of \u201cCuba si, bloqueo no!\u201d before addressing the gathered crowd. \u201cSisters and brothers, many thanks for your solidarity,\u201d he said. \u201cMany thanks for your support.
