Some of the reported symptoms are likely crickets chirping <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/M2jlfTEoKm\">https:\/\/t.co\/M2jlfTEoKm<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ben Walsh (@BenDWalsh) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenDWalsh\/status\/1443625164990828547?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 30, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The redacted and declassified version of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/21068770-jason-report-2018-havana-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JASON report<\/a>&nbsp;was published on Thursday by BuzzFeed. It was originally classified as&nbsp;<em>\u201cSecret,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;and was not shared with the National Academies of Sciences panel whose report on \u2018Havana Syndrome\u2019 was commissioned by Foggy Bottom last year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NAS panel concluded microwaves were the&nbsp;<em>\u201cmost plausible\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;cause of the symptoms, which purportedly include headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, hearing and vision impairment, nosebleeds, vertigo and memory loss, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to JASON, however,\u00a0<em>\u201cNo plausible single source of energy (neither radio\/microwaves nor sonic) can produce\u00a0<\/em>both<em>\u00a0the recorded audio\/video signals\u00a0<\/em>and<em>\u00a0the reported medical effects.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The recorded noise was either mechanical or biological in origin, rather than electronic, and the\u00a0<em>\u201cmost likely\u201d<\/em>\u00a0source was\u00a0<em>Anurogryllis celerinictus<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Indies short-tailed cricket.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This exact species was identified by University of California Berkeley researchers in January 2019 as the source of the mysterious noise, based on a recording released by AP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JASON experts ruled out pulsed microwaves and ultrasound, in part because electronics and WiFi networks in the house where the noises were first recorded suffered no disruptions during the incident. They concluded the noises did not correspond to microwave or ultrasound frequencies by calculating the power that would be required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration used the \u2018Havana syndrome\u2019 as a pretext to scale back the recently re-established diplomatic presence in Cuba. It gained a life of its own in the CIA and the US media later on, with over 200 spies now reportedly claiming they had been affected \u2013 and rampant speculation that China or Russia may be using some kind of science-fiction superweapon to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just last week, the US House of Representatives voted 427-0 to pass the Helping American Victims Afflicted by Neurological Attacks (HAVANA) Act, giving the CIA millions of dollars to compensate the personnel affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In mid-September, a team of Cuban scientists\u00a0announced\u00a0that claims of secret sonic weapons were not \u201c<em>scientifically acceptable,<\/em>\u201d and there was\u00a0<em>\u201cno scientific evidence of attacks.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Unaware of the JASON report, they attributed the symptoms to some kind of mass psychosis on the part of the US spies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Named after a hero from Greek mythology,<strong><\/strong>JASON is an independent group of scientists that has advised the US government since the heyday of the Cold War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThis is a high powered group of expert scientists,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;former Los Alamos National Laboratory chemist Cheryl Rofer told BuzzFeed, adding that the declassified report&nbsp;<em>\u201cappears to be a very thorough scientific analysis, the kind which wasn\u2019t done in the National Academies of Sciences report.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhat is available in the report is pretty dubious about directed energy weapons, and pretty positive about crickets,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Rofer
