However, multiple outlets have incorrectly described the image as an&nbsp;<em>\u201canti-government protest,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;including the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ibb.co\/yXv7P2R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guardian<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ibb.co\/zb9DpQk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fox News<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ibb.co\/gT5j6FL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Financial Times<\/a>, the New York Times, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ibb.co\/HHcfGMC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington Times<\/a>&nbsp;and Voice of America. The latter outlet, the US-government funded VOA, committed the error on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ibb.co\/M51m8hF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two<\/a>&nbsp;separate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ibb.co\/s3BpvLq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">occasions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GrayZone journalist Ben Norton and Alan MacLeod of MintPress News were among the first to note the error, sharing screenshots of several examples. The organization played a major role in the Cuban Revolution and later formed into a political party, with the two-colored flag becoming a common symbol of support for Cuba\u2019s communist government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the six news outlets cited above, only the Guardian had issued a correction at the time of writing, stating that it amended its story because the\u00a0<em>\u201coriginal agency caption on the image&#8230; incorrectly described them as anti-government protesters. On its Instagram page, CNN also\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CRPc9xzA5JH\/\" target=\"_blank\">strongly implied<\/a>\u00a0that another photo showed Cuban protesters, with its caption reading, in part,\u00a0<em>\u201cThousands of Cubans protested a lack of food and medicine.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The image in question was taken by an AFP photographer, and a search through the agency\u2019s photo gallery shows the rally was actually held in Miami, Florida. CNN appears to have omitted the first portion of the AFP caption, which made clear the protest was based in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNN?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CNN<\/a> is using a photo of a protest in Miami and pretending it&#39;s Cuba. Very normal. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ManufacturedConsent?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ManufacturedConsent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SOSCuba?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SOSCuba<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y9Sge9pwAX\">pic.twitter.com\/y9Sge9pwAX<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Chad Loder (@chadloder) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chadloder\/status\/1414804781252575235?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 13, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">he photo mix-ups in corporate media have been compounded by a wave of false and misleading posts by observers online, with many users sharing photos of gatherings in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Gal_5_14\/status\/1414981060148989952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Egypt, Spain<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/azureScapegoat\/status\/1414611721021530116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Argentina<\/a>&nbsp;while claiming they depict unrest in Cuba \u2013 some racking up thousands of shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The anti-state protests kicked off in earnest on Sunday, seeing large crowds of demonstrators take to the streets in Havana and elsewhere to demand urgent action on food, medicine and power shortages. The government, however, claims the rallies are fueled by hostile foreign powers, namely Washington, and involve only a small number of \u2018counter-revolutionaries\u2019.
