Three of them, Soberana 01, Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus, are being made by the Finlay Institute for Vaccines (IFV). The other two, Abdala and Mambisa, are brainchildren of the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The definitive advantage of the Cuban jabs is that they do not require additional refrigeration requirements: they can be kept at temperatures ranging from 2C to 8C, which considerably simplifies their transportation and storage. Soberana 02 and Adbala are regarded as the most advanced among Cuban vaccine candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soberana 02<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Testing of Soberana 02, Spanish for &#8220;sovereignty,&#8221; is nearing completion: on Monday, the nation&#8217;s bio-pharmaceutical group, BioCubaFarma,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BioCubaFarma\/posts\/2508869146075511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;the beginning of intervention studies with workers from Finlay Vaccines Institute (IFV) and Molecular Immunology Centre (CIM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On March 3, the Centre for State Control of Drugs, Equipment and Medical Devices (CECMED) green-lighted the Phase 3 testing of the vaccine. Two weeks later, Granma, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.granma.cu\/cuba\/2021-03-18\/first-week-of-phase-iii-clinical-trials-of-soberana-02-concludes-satisfactorily\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that the initial stage of Soberana 02&#8217;s Phase 3 clinical trials had been completed &#8220;satisfactorily, in strict compliance with the established protocol and best clinical practices.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier in January, the Cuban government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/372\/bmj.n171\/rr-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pledged<\/a>\u00a0to produce 100 million doses of Soberana 02 in 2021 to meet its own demand and that of other countries: Vietnam, Iran, Venezuela, Pakistan and India. Other nations have already signaled their interest in obtaining the drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Cuba is conducting clinical trials for two vaccine candidates with plans to produce 100 million doses, distributed for free to all Cubans and exported to Latin America and Asia. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yuIZYBvT9v\">pic.twitter.com\/yuIZYBvT9v<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Belly of The Beast (@bellybeastcuba) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bellybeastcuba\/status\/1355154575003680775?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 29, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bForty-four-thousand individuals between 19 and 80 years of age are expected to be vaccinated by the end of June in controlled clinical trials to provide data on the efficacy of the jab. The vaccine is administered in two shots, with a 28-day interval. Researchers are also considering injecting a third dose to boost immunity.&nbsp;In addition, 150,000 volunteers, including medical professionals, have been taking part in research since 22 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;One of the first vaccinated is Dr. Tays Hern\u00e1ndez, a researcher at the Center, who leads the team to monitor the immune response of the subjects vaccinated with Soberana [01, 02 and Plus],&#8221; the Centre for Molecular Immunology&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/centro_cim\/status\/1374014658303119369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;on Monday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Abdala<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vvaccine candidate Abdala \u2013 the name of a poem written by Cuban revolutionary Jose Marti \u2013 entered the third phase of its clinical trials on Monday after getting the nod from CECMED on 18 March. The drug will be administered to 48,000 volunteers aged 19 to 80 in a three-dose vaccination schedule with 14 day intervals between injections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Cuba?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Cuba<\/a> has two COVID-19 vaccine candidates in phase III of clinical trials after the regulatory authority on Thursday approved Abdala to pass to that stage. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IdIesQ4JlP\">pic.twitter.com\/IdIesQ4JlP<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Granma (English) (@Granma_English) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Granma_English\/status\/1372900351133814785?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 19, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u200b&#8221;The Abdala candidate was placed in its Phase I clinical trial at the Saturnino Lora Hospital in Santiago de Cuba,&#8221; Dr. Eulogio Pimentel, vice-president of the BioCubaFarma,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesurenglish.net\/news\/Cuba-Abdalas-Phase-III-Clinical-Trials-To-Start-Monday-20210319-0016.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the press last week. &#8220;At that time, 132 individuals were included who have already been vaccinated and their immune response and safety evaluated. This trial began on December 7, 2020, and in February 2021 we started the Phase II clinical trial, which included 660 volunteers, also from the head municipality of Santiago de Cuba.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Six Production Lines to Manufacture Five Vaccines<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All five Cuban vaccines apply antigen to the spike proteins of the coronavirus. However, these antigens have different origins: thus, Soberana jabs contain antigens derived from mammalian cells, while Mambisa and Abdala use yeast cells. But that is not all: the peculiarity of Mambisa is that it is a nasal spray that induces systemic and mucosal immunity. It is expected that a mass immunisation campaign on the island will be started in August 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Having these production systems guarantees that we will have the necessary doses to vaccinate our population. The coronavirus pandemic did not catch Cubans off guard, unlike many other nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As early as on 29 January, 2020, the country&#8217;s Council of Ministers approved a COVID-19 Prevention and Control Plan, while on 28 February, 2020, the first five research projects focused on COVID-19 were approved,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.granma.cu\/cuba\/2021-03-16\/thirty-five-covid-19-landmarks-in-cuba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to Granma. The same month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cubasupport.ie\/latest\/cuban-biotech-to-the-rescue-the-story-of-a-potential-anti-covid-19-drug-told-by-one-of-its-creators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cuba&#8217;s recombinant human Interferon Alpha 2B<\/a>, proved its efficacy as a treatment for the coronavirus in China.
