It is home to one of the largest coral reefs in the world<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most readers are familiar with the 90 miles that represent the distance between Cuba and Florida. But you might not know that Cuba has over 3,000 miles of coastline and more than 4,000 islets and keys in its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Cayo_Coco-Jardines_Report_final.pd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">archipelago<\/a>. It is home to one of the largest coral reefs in the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cuban&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/tentativelists\/1802\/\" target=\"_blank\">archipelago<\/a>&nbsp;boasts a magnificent marine biodiversity. It is home to various fish species as well as some endangered migratory species, such as marine sea turtles.&nbsp; A combination of a lack of new coastal developments, low use of fertilizers, tight controls on commercial fishing, the establishment of protected areas and a smaller human footprint have meant that Cuba\u2019s coasts are relatively much cleaner than others in the area and are a mecca for divers and snorkelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/startupcuba.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Cuba-3.png?w=747&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"cuba coast\" class=\"wp-image-6078\"\/><figcaption><em>Photo: GCCA+, Mundo Latino Cuba<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past decades, many stakeholders such as the Cuban Center for Coastal Ecosystem Research, have been monitoring and protecting these areas using an integrative management approach that supports both the natural environment and local communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em>\u2026you might not know that Cuba has over 3,000 miles of coastline and more than 4,000 islets and keys in its archipelago.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment has prioritized coral reef research but a lack of resources has been an ongoing challenge.
