{"id":2274,"date":"2020-07-01T20:27:08","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T20:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cubasupport.ie\/latest\/?p=2274"},"modified":"2020-07-01T20:27:10","modified_gmt":"2020-07-01T20:27:10","slug":"statement-by-the-organisation-of-eastern-caribbean-states-oecs-on-the-recent-escalation-of-united-states-action-toward-the-republic-of-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cubasupport.ie\/latest\/statement-by-the-organisation-of-eastern-caribbean-states-oecs-on-the-recent-escalation-of-united-states-action-toward-the-republic-of-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"STATEMENT BY THE ORGANISATION OF EASTERN CARIBBEAN STATES (OECS) ON THE RECENT ESCALATION OF UNITED STATES ACTION TOWARD THE REPUBLIC OF CUBA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"747\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cubasupport.ie\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/oecs2.jpg?resize=747%2C388&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cubasupport.ie\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/oecs2.jpg?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cubasupport.ie\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/oecs2.jpg?resize=300%2C156&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cubasupport.ie\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/oecs2.jpg?resize=768%2C399&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 747px) 100vw, 747px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Authority of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) meeting virtually at its Sixty-Ninth Session on June 18, 2020:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NOTING&nbsp;<\/strong>the renewed intensification of sanctions by the United States Government through its decision to certify the Republic of Cuba under Section 40A(a) of the Arms Export Control Act as \u201c<strong>not cooperating fully<\/strong>\u201d with the United States counterterrorism efforts in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NOTING ALSO&nbsp;<\/strong>that this decision contravenes the United Nations\u2019 call on the United States to provide sanctions relief to nations reeling from the economic fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CONCERNED&nbsp;<\/strong>that certification of Cuba as \u201cnot cooperating fully\u201d will cause United States internal systems and agencies to frustrate and to block Cuba\u2019s access to economic assistance including multilateral aid and loans from external and international bodies, as well as membership of multilateral organisations;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CONCERNED ALSO&nbsp;<\/strong>that this decision by the United States to blacklist Cuba constitutes further strengthening of the economic and financial sanctions against the country; and that the \u201cnon-cooperative\u201d designation will serve as a deterrent to commercial banks and international companies doing business with Cuba;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CONCERNED FURTHER&nbsp;<\/strong>that the blacklisting of Cuba by the United States constitutes continued erosion of the progress that had been achieved in recent years in relations between the two countries; and that the action undermines the stability, peace and security of the Caribbean region;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CONVINCED&nbsp;<\/strong>that these measures are unwarranted and will only serve to cause great human suffering in Cuba;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CONDEMNS&nbsp;<\/strong>strongly, the recent certification of Cuba by the United States Government as \u201c<strong>not cooperating fully<\/strong>\u201d with the United States counterterrorism efforts;
