Although Cuban doctors do not always have all the necessary supplies, they have managed to perform 6,385 kidney transplants since 1970. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Cuba’s physician Julio Cesar Sierra Friday denounced that the United States blockade against his country is hurting the population that needs vital organ transplants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The blockade prevents Cuba from acquiring the essential resources \nfor the successful development of transplant processes on \nthe Island,” the transplant coordinator condemned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Sierra, \nresources such as medicines, reagents, and other supplies are imported \nfrom developed countries and Cuba needs to overcome many obstacles to \nreach them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Although the\u00a0Island\u00a0has become a regional-level example\u00a0in health care, \u00a0we need agility and ease in obtaining these inputs. Every transplant process\u00a0urgently demands that we always have everything essential at hand.”\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuba has encouraging results in its organ transplant program. In the \nwestern mountainous area, for example, doctors recently saved a \nnine-year-old boy after his father donated a kidney\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b.\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among other positive \nexperiences, the specialist mentioned the creation of health promotion \ngroups in 2019, which has helped to raise awareness about the importance\n of organ transplantation for patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“These health groups \nallow us to eliminate certain taboos since many people do not want to \ntalk about organ donation. They are also afraid to take the step or \nreceive a part of another person’s body,” Sierra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1970 to date, Cuba has managed to perform 6,385 kidney transplants, 544 of which\u00a0came from live donors, with an 80 percent survival rate, according to the local outlet Trabajadores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
