Starve the Cuban people, that’s the plan

“The only foreseeable means we have today to alienate internal support for the Revolution is through disenchantment and discouragement, based on dissatisfaction and economic difficulties. Any conceivable means to weaken the economic life of Cuba must be used promptly, denying it money and supplies to lower real and monetary wages, in order to cause hunger, despair and the overthrow of the government ”.

Statement by the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez on behalf of the G77 at the Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals

That is also the case for those countries suffering the imposition of unilateral coercive measures that constitute a serious violation of the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. Those measures gravely hinder the efforts of the affected countries towards the achievement of the SDGs and sustainable development in general. The international community, including the United Nations system, should continue to firmly reject the imposition of those measures and to work for their unconditional lifting.

The EU Blocking Statute

The EU Blocking Statute, designed to protect EU companies from the extraterritorial effects of certain U.S. sanctions laws, also applies to the EU banking system. However, some EU banks have been accused of violating the Statute by blocking transactions with Cuba or with the word “Cuba” in the transaction description, thereby illegally complying with U.S. sanctions.

Despite the EU’s efforts to protect its economic interests and uphold international law, some EU banks have chosen to prioritise compliance with U.S. sanctions over the EU Blocking Statute. This has led to criticism that the Statute has been underutilised and that EU companies continue to comply with U.S. sanctions, thereby undermining the EU’s efforts to protect its economic interests.

There is no metaphor in that statement, but rather the absolute certainty that his rebellious spirit survives in the daily life of a country that does not renounce the construction of the social, emancipatory and humanist work that is the Revolution.
